Beer Brewing Kit Question

So I became a fan of beer when I met my boyfriend of 3 years. He drank good beer, not Budweiser or Miller Light that my friends drank. I have since become a fan of many various beers and am always willing to try new ones.
Anyway, that was kind of a short introduction, but I have a question for you guys. Before I met my boyfriend he used to brew his own beer with his friends, since he has moved he has mentioned more than once that he misses doing this. His birthday is on Sunday and I was thinking of getting him a beer brewing kit. There is a store nearby that sells brewing supplies, but I have been unable to get there (I work full-time with a part-time job after that and they have strange hours). Do any of you have suggestions of what supplies he needs to start off with and approximate prices?
Sorry this was so long winded, but I thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

Perhaps a place to start is by getting a gift certificate to the store nearby. This would perhaps get him stoked enough to go there and select what he knows he needs. There are certain items that can be had from your basic kitchen, but others that cannot and need to be purchased along with the ingredients for that first brew.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, I was planning on getting the equipment and letting him pick out the ingredients...and seeing as he has done this before, I have considered taking him with me if I ever make it up there...

Of course not knowing what he is like, I know I would want to pick out my own equipment, thus the Gift Cert idea.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info...I took him with me to the Home Brew store that he used to go to and got all the equipment, the guy remembered him and gave us a discount on the brew kit ($100 I paid 80) and he picked out a Sweet Stout to make and get him back into brewing!

I have seen basic equipment kits as cheap as $80 (plus shipping and tax)

My LHBS (Local Home Brew Store) has a starter kit at about $130.00, but that also includes a recipe kit. You can see the full list of equipment they include here.
